CAMPING GAME is a pattern and vocabulary game. The point of the game is to guess the secret pattern that the starting person has chosen.
Instructions:
There are no materials needed for this activity.
Step 1. Have students sit in a circle (this is not necessary, but makes it like sitting around a campfire).
Step 2. Give the person who is starting a second to think of a secret pattern that only they know. Here are some examples of patterns that can be used:
Word patterns
- The next item has to start with the last letter of the preceding item.
- For example, the first person says 'tree,' the next person's word has to start with an "e" because that was the last letter of the preceding word.
- For example, the first person says 'tree,' the next person's word has to start with an "e" because that was the last letter of the preceding word.
- The first letter of all the items is the same.
- For example, the first person says 'muffin,' the next person's word has to start with an "m."
- For example, the first person says 'muffin,' the next person's word has to start with an "m."
- The words have to be two syllables.
Body language
- Your arms need to be crossed.
- You have to cross your legs.
Step 3. Whoever is starting will begin by saying three items that they would bring camping following the pattern that they have chosen (note that this does not need to be an item required for camping, it is supposed to be silly).
Step 4. The person who is starting will begin by saying, "Je vais amener _________."
Step 5. The next person then will ask the starting person, "Est-ce que je peux amener __________?" If the item fits the secret pattern, the starting person will say, "Oui," but if it does not fit, then he/she will say, "Non." Then the next person goes, always asking the starting person.
Step 6. This will continue around the circle until someone guesses the pattern or players give up because no one can figure out the pattern.

Adaptations:
1. To make this game easier, choose a category that the pattern has to be based on, such as only using patterns that pertain to the words themselves.
2. Consider allowing students to have vocabulary sheets that they can refer to during the game. This can help students if they cannot think of words.
3. To make it harder, allow a set number of guesses and do not have a set category for the pattern.
4. To make it harder have the person starting only say one or perhaps two items instead of three. This will make it more of a challenge when guessing the pattern.
Assessment:
This activity would be great for assessing students' vocabulary knowledge and their comprehension of patterns.
