PICTIONARY is a word and picture game that will encourage students to find a way (other than oral or written) to depict a word. This is helpful in developing the strategy of associating words with pictures, as sometimes we may not know the word we wish to use but we can still use a drawing to communicate.
Instructions:
Materials:
Option 1: As a class
* Below we will provide the rules to play as a class. For small groups the rules are the same but on a smaller scale.
Step 1. (Optional) Students create word cards (these can be on scrap pieces of paper). All that is needed on the word card is a single word. These will be gathered together. Alternatively, the teacher can create word cards in advance.
Step 2. Divide class into two teams.
Step 3. Choose a student from each team to come to the front and then choose a word card at random. This will be the word that both students will need to draw.
Step 4. Students will each have half of the board and begin drawing the word at the same time.
Step 5. Each team will watch as their teammates draw. The teams will make guesses as to what is being drawn. The first team to guess correctly wins that round.
Adaptations:
1. There is the option to time the students as they are drawing so that the teams have a time limit for their guessing.
2. More teams could be created and positioned at different locations around the classroom so other teams cannot see their drawings.
Language Strategies:
This is an excellent game to practice the strategy of 'representing meaning through illustrations.'
Assessment:
This is a great opportunity to assess students' comprehension of various French vocabulary.
