HANGMAN is a word game that can help students learn new vocabulary and reinforce spelling.
Instructions:
Materials needed:
Step 1. Choose a host, this will be the person responsible for choosing a word or phrase for the players to guess. If playing as a class the teacher can be the host, if the students are playing in small groups have one student act as the host.
Step 2. The host will choose a secret word or phrase. They will draw a blank line for each letter in the word. The host will not tell anyone the word.
For example, the host chooses the word "Chat". The host will draw four blank lines, one for each letter in the word "Chat."
Step 3. Students will take turns guessing letters. Students should use the French pronunciation of letters (it would be advisable to review the pronunciation of letters prior to the game). A student is only allowed to guess one letter at a time. Whenever a student guesses a letter correctly the host will fill in the blank where that letter occurs. If the letter occurs more than once in the word, they will fill in every blank where that letter occurs. However, if a letter is guessed that is not in the word, the host will draw a body part for each wrong letter.
For example, Student A guesses there is an 's' in your word? The host will draw a body part of the hangman. Student B guesses there is an 'a' in your word? The host will fill in the blank for a (_ _ a _).
Step 4. This will continue until the hangman's body is complete or the students guess all of the letters in the secret word.
Adaptations:
1. For beginners, set a category that the secret word will be chosen from.
2. For an advanced class or more of a challenge, use phrases in French instead of words.
Assessment:
This game would be an excellent opportunity to assess students' spelling and their vocabulary.
Materials needed:
- Writing implement
- Something to write on (paper, whiteboard)
