Step 1. Put students into small groups of no more than four.
Step 2. Give each group a set of cards. The number of cards may vary depending on age of students or how large you want the game to be. (For our purposes we will say 16 cards, eight with words and eight with pictures.)
Step 3. Students will need to shuffle cards and arrange them into a grid of
4 x 4 face down.
Step 4. Students will take turns flipping over two cards at a time. If the cards match (word to picture) the student must say the word (or at least attempt to say the word) in French in order to keep the pair, they are then able to try and match another pair. If the cards don't match then the student needs to flip the cards back face down and it will move to the next student's turn.
Step 5. The student with the most pairs wins.
*Be sure to encourage as much French use as possible.
Adaptations:
1. One adaptation could be the amount of cards students have to play with. 16 cards seems to be a good number for beginners in a 30 min. period.
2. One could make the pictures more challenging by having verbs as the words to match to the picture.
3. Students could use a wordlist to help them in learning their vocabulary for beginners.
4. Students would not be able to use their vocabulary list for more of a challenge.
Assessment:
This game would be an excellent opportunity to assess students' comprehension of vocabulary and their effort in participating in a French language activity.
